Why you must presell

If you want to make more money as an affiliate, you must presell.

First, what is preselling? There are two components to it – art & science. And it’s function is to prepare your reader to buy something. Then when they’re ready, refer them to the product website so they can buy it. When done correctly, your reader will not even notice.

In a nutshell, you provide value. And then refer them to the product website. In just a minute, I’ll explain exactly how to presell. Before we get into that, you should understand what’s in it for you. Here are a few benefits of preselling:

  • It builds trust – Once you have your readers’ trust, they will click your links more readily. Which obviously means you’ll make more sales.
  • It takes your reader out of defense mode – When you’re not hyping or pitching a product, your reader lets their guard down. And in turn they read to understand what you’re saying. So your content get absorbed.
  • It puts them in a buying mood – Your readers are now receiving your message. Being open means, they are open to everything you give them. This includes the sales website you send them to! Being open to a sales message is what it means being in a buying mood.
  • It increases your sales – You’ve prepped them and referred them in the right state of mind. With a feeling of trust and openness. This dramatically boosts your sales rate!
  • It boosts customer loyalty – People like to make their own buying decisions. Versus being pitched or convinced. And this makes them feel better about the product they purchased.
  • It boosts your profits – Satisfied customers are less like to refund. Which means you keep more of your affiliate commissions.

The need to presell is clear. You earn more commissions. And produce happier customers. It’s a win-win-win!

Now, here’s how preselling works:

Now you know whey preselling is critical. And hopefully you’re convinced you need to start doing it. You’re ready to learn how to do it properly. Like we talked about before, it’s an art. And it’s a science.

The art of preselling

The first step is in getting your readers to trust you and open up. And the only method of doing this is to give exceptional value to your readers. Now, providing enough info to be useful, but still making them want more – that’s the art of it. So you send them to the product website with a hunger for more of what the product provides. And because you’ve gained trust, they’re more receptive to the sales message and more likely to buy.

Part 2 – the Science

There are also several key elements that need to be included.

The first is how you present the information. You’ve got to map out your strategy before you start writing. Your end goal is to make a sale of the product you’re preselling. How can providing information accomplish this goal? The first method is to provide enough info to get them started, but not enough to finish. Or you can give them so much information that it feels overwhelming to do what you’re talking about. Either way, the product sales page solves the problem.

But you can’t link to your affiliate link. Instead, you use a direct link to the product website. That’s because nobody likes to click on affiliate links. But how will you earn affiliate commissions if you don’t use your affiliate link? There’s a trick to make this work… You “pre-cookie” your reader before sending them to the sales page.

You also want to link to the sales page from inside your article’s content. People are used to clicking on hyperlinked words to get information they’re looking for. And when the words are in context like this, it makes perfect sense for your reader to click them.

What you have now is a super powerful system for affiliate marketing success.

OK, here’s the not-so-good news:

It’s extremely difficult to do this correctly. Let’s talk about everything required to put this plan into action: Awesome content. First of all, you actually have to write great articles and give value to your readers. This means you have to be able to write well, and have enough knowledge to be useful. Preselling skills. Yes, you must providing useful content. You also have to present the info in a way that provides real value. While at the same time making them want more. Or make the information so overwhelming they realize they can’t do it on their own.

Picking products. You also need to determine what products you’ll be preselling. Even if you can pull off writing and great article. All your efforts are wasted if you send your reader to the wrong sales letter.

Technical skills. To be most effective you have to use the “covert cookie” method. This is fairly simple – you use a 1 X 1 image and set the “source” to your affiliate link. (But if you mess it up, your referrals won’t be tracked.)

Summary:

Now you know exactly how to presell effectively. And doing this increases your affiliate commissions by over 500%! So, start now and develop preselling content for all your affiliate promotions. Take action now. The effort it takes is well worth the benefits…

Traffic Generation Tips

August 4th, 2010

The most important thing in any web business is traffic – lots and lots of traffic. Obviously, this assumes you actually have a reason for wanting this traffic. What you do with the traffic when it gets to your site could be any number of things. The most crucial aspect of this process is getting the visitors to your site.

Let’s talk about how to generate traffic…

Here are a few of the most popular way to get traffic to your site – for free:

  • Web 2.0 Sites
  • Article Marketing
  • Video

OK, so how do they work?

Web 2.0 Sites

By web 2.0 we mean any site where the users actually create the content. These are great sites to work with because they allow you to participate in this content creation. And because of the highly interactive and popular nature of these sites, Google and other search engines “index” their content regularly. Which means the content on them gets “indexed” faster and with more weight. So, if you place links to your own site inside your content, you get a search engine ranking benefit from those links. That’s the real benefit of adding content to this sites – search engine ranking means ongoing free traffic. There are many more web 2.0 traffic tactics we don’t have time to get into here, but this will get you started.

Articles Sites

The natural next topic is article marketing. Article sites are in essence web 2.0 websites. Article directories are sites where users (including you) can upload articles they have written. Just as with the other web 2.0 sites, having your content included gives you immediate traffic and search engine ranking. But you also get the extra benefit of other users taking your article and putting it on their site. And along with your article, they have to include your author information and a link back to you – so you get more free traffic and SEO benefits. If you want to generate traffic from articles follow these steps:

  • Figure out what keywords you want to go after
  • Write specifically to target these keywords
  • Hyperlink these keywords to your website – both in the content of the article and in your author’s info section.

Video

Our discussion would not be complete without talking about video. Just like article directories, video sharing sites also rely on user-generated content. And just as article directories give you great SEO benefits and allow others to redistribute your content on their sites. video sharing sites give you all these same benefits. And in addition to this, because Google and the others love video so much, you can get listed for highly competitive keywords much more easily.

Here’s how to get free traffic using video

  • Set up your YouTube account
  • Make your profile uncluttered by turning off all the modules
  • Put relevant “tags” in your profile
  • Include a link to your main site in your profile
  • Upload at least 1 video
  • For each video use your keywords in the tags, the descriptions and the title

Summary:

If you take action on the items listed here you’ll have free traffic in no time.

Membership Niche Selection Tips

August 3rd, 2010

Let’s talk about niche selection. This is very important to ensuring the profitability of your membership website.

Number 1 – Discover Niches with Fanatics

The number 1 thing you have to do is find fanatics if you want a profitable membership website. Fanatic is defined as someone with an irrational enthusiasm. These are the people you’re looking for because they are so enthusiastic they’re willing to spend money on their topic of fanaticism. Here’s how to find fanatics:

  • Look at magazine racks. This is an often overlooked, yet extremely simple way to find niches that people are interested in. Because it’s becoming harder and harder to keep print periodicals profitable these days, if you see a magazine on the shelves, you know it’s making money. And that means there are lots of people interested in it. If they can make money in a print version, you can probably make money with a membership website.
  • Watch and listen for fanatics in your daily life. Pay attention to conversations, social events, TV, restaurants, public places to see what people are talking about. People generally talk about things they are interested in. And that may also mean they’re willing to pay money to learn more about it.
  • Conventions, clubs, and organizations. Once again, if there are enough people interested in a topic to create a club or organization, then there are enough people to build a membership business around it. Conventions are expensive to hold and attend, so if one if going on that’s another strong indication of a good niche to go into with your membership website.
  • Think about the things that you are interested in. If you’re interested in something, it’s highly likely others are, too. The icing on the cake here is that you get to build a business doing something you love.
  • One simple and easy way to find out what’s hot is Google Trends. This service shows you the current most popular search terms. These topics are the hottest topics because lots and lots of people want information about them. Hot topics that people are excited about make great niches for your membership website.

Step 2 – Determine the financial feasibility

After selecting a possible niche to build your membership site around, the next step is to find out if it’s a profitable niche to be in. The quickest way to find out is to determine if others are profiting in your potential niche.

OK, how do we figure that out?

  • Are there blogs or forums in this niche? Take the name of your niche and search for “niche name blog” & “niche name forum” in Google to see if there is an active group of people talking about and interested in the niche. This lets you know there is a market (a group of people actively interested in the niche.)
  • Check Amazon, eBay and Google Shopping to find out if others are making and selling products in your niche. What you’re trying to figure out is if anyone is making money in this niche, and if people are selling products it means they are making money.
  • Watch Google Adwords for a period of time and look for ads the run again and again. Adwords ads are expensive, so people only run them repeatedly if they are profitable. And to be profitable, they have to be selling products and making money.

Step 3 – Determine ease of entry

After figuring out a good niche and determining that other people are making money in it, the last thing to do is decide if you will be able to enter the market. Here are some things to look at to figure this out:

  • Product types. What kind of products are being sold in the niche? You’re looking for a niche that sells info products. The easiest membership website to create and maintain are information membership sites.
  • The next thing to look at is the competition. You don’t want to try to break into a saturated marketing, so figure out how many people are already selling in this niche.
  • Size vs. Competition. Some competition is good. It means that this is a profitable market. And as long as the size of the market is large enough to support the competition, you’re fine.
  • How ready is the market for marketing messages, and how willing are the fanatics to buy. Some niches are made up of people who require lots information and have a very long lead time, and some markets are filled with people who will spend lots of money right now.

Putting it all together

OK, now that you’ve figured out what niche you’re going to go into. Determined there is money to be made and that the competition is not too strong to break into it. You’re ready to start your membership business. If you’ve followed along with these steps you’re success in practically guaranteed. The only thing left to cover is exactly how to run your membership business

Traffic is King, but this comes FIRST

August 2nd, 2010

Let’s talk about some powerful ways to get free and automated traffic coming to your website.

But, first…

The first thing you need to do before you start going after any traffic is keyword research. The reason this is so important is that you are going to be building content and traffic sources for specific keywords. Which means you need to put some thought into the keywords you’re targeting.

Here are the important considerations for your research:

  • Will you be able to rank for these keywords? Take a look at the “strength” of others websites (and how many) are already targeting these keywords.
  • What kinds of visitors do these keywords bring? If you don’t do your research you’ll end up with a lot of traffic that doesn’t buy from you. This is not what you’re looking for.
  • What about affiliates? Nothing brings more buyers like an army of affiliates. So make sure you are also targeting keywords to attract affiliates.

Although this is an essential step, doing it all by hand can take a very long time. And hiring an expert is very expensive. The upside is that these two factors keep most everyone from even doing their keyword research. The smartest marketers use website traffic software to automate this and other aspects of their business. This way you get this critical step done fast and done well.

Once you know your keywords…

Once you’ve done your properly keyword research, you’re now ready to start targeting these keywords to draw in visitors.

Powerful Traffic Tactics:

  • Most people overlook the power of Surveys!
  • “Answer” Sites
  • Video

Surveys

The truth is that people really enjoy taking surveys and finding out what other people think. You can use this fact to provide “sticky” content for other website owners. It’s a win-win. They get a great perk on their site and you get a link back to yours. Think about that – you get website traffic for free just for making a survey! Most people think surveys are just for collecting data, but in this case you don’t even care about the answers. So, get creative and make up a survey that’s wacky to get other people interested in putting it on their sites.

“Traffic Traps”

Maybe you’ve seen these help sites where people post questions and other people answer them. Once again, the main reason for this site is not the reason you’re interested. The other thing they can be used for is to get traffic to your site, leads for your business and sales! Of course, the process of digging through these sites and pulling out the content info of leads for your business is very time consuming. So, if you’re smart, you’ll use website traffic software to do it all for you. This allows you to do the things in your business that can’t be automated and let the software just give you the leads.

Video Sharing Sites

Video is huge and sites like YouTube and Vimeo are extremely popular. These sites generate massive traffic and people watch over 2 billion videos a day on YouTube alone . So don’t miss out of this incredible source of free website traffic.

Even if you don’t think you can make a good video. It’s really easy to just start with an article or something you’ve already written. And use free screen capture software to record yourself reading it. You can even get software that will automatically do this for you.

Summary

It’s not that hard to get traffic to your websites. Just be a creative and think outside the box a bit. You can even use software to automate most of what we’ve talked about.

So, start right now and:

  • Do your keyword research
  • Next, set up a survey or two with viral appeal
  • Make sure to use the “answer” sites
  • And don’t forget about video

Affiliate Marketing Secrets

August 1st, 2010

Winning Affiliate Marketing Strategies

One of the easiest and fastest way to generate income online is through affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing means that all you do is sendvisitors to someone else’s website, they handle the sales, support and billing, and you keep 50% or more of the sales

Here’s just a few benefits

  1. You’re able to start right now without having to create a product, write the sales page, develop the website, develop marketing materials, or do support, billing and maintenance.
  2. There’s practically no investment of time on your part because you don’t have to do the customer support or deal with billing or technical issues.
  3. You have nearly zero risk because you already know the product sells, because the product owner has already made sure the product sells. So if you send visitors you will get paid.

Looking at these benefits, it’s clear that affiliate marketing is the way to go!

There is one major drawback…

Once you send your visitors to the product sales page, they are gone forever. Most of them will not buy on their first visit, which means you’re losing over 90% of the traffic right off the top. That’s fine for the product owner because she can sell to them again and again, but you can’t.

What’s the solution?

It’s simple: You must get your visitors’ email addresses before you send them to the product owner’s website. By getting their contact info, you can follow up increase your odds of making the sale by sending them back to the product owner’s website multiple times. And if you’re really on top of your game, you’ll then send to a content mini-site in between.

Here are the benefits of doing affiliate marketing like this:

  1. Owning a list of potential buyers gives you the ability to market additional products at the push of a button.
  2. You’ll be warming them up by providing valuable information and then casually linking to the product sales page in the context of this information.

In order to set a system like this up, you will need the following affiliate marketing tools:

  1. A squeeze page, and even better a Video squeeze page.
  2. At least a few pages of great content
  3. An email series with at least 5 high-quality content emails

You’ll use the squeeze page as the place to send your visitors instead of using the product website. This page is where you collect your visitors’ contact info and add them to your autoresponder, which in turn starts sending them the multi-part email series. Once your visitors have been subscribed to your email series, they are sent to your content pages.

The content pages provide valuable information for your visitors and make them more receptive to the sales message that you’ll link to from inside the content. And even if they don’t buy on the first visit, your email series sends them back to the product sales page again and again to increase your sales.

All of this together increases your chances of making the sale by up to 500% so it’s well worth the effort of setting it up. And after you get it all set up, it runs on total auto-pilot. You just refer people to your lead capture page, instead of the product sales page.

Setting it all up yourself requires some skill, and if you’re not up to it, you can use a service like Affiliate Silver Bullet. With a service like that, you don’t have to do anything. They make the video, build the squeeze page, write the email series, develop the content mini-site, etc. And then just give you a finished package. The benefit is that it’s much less expensive then you could do it yourself, and it’s instantly set up. The drawback is that you won’t be the only one using these affiliate tools. But the internet is huge, so this shouldn’t really affect you.

The other route you can take is to hire people on Elance to create and implement the various aspects for you. Either way, it’s an important step that you need to take if you’re going to be serious about your affiliate marketing.
